DESCRIPTION
Solid 1&2 is a flexible mixed-use building which was built in Amsterdam in 2010. Typical of “solid” buildings, Solid 1&2 has a durable shell and core while its interior spaces are designed to be entirely flexible. Units are sold empty to buyers in a bidding process, and the buyer is able to transform the space into an apartment, hotel room, or office space. Stairs and utilities are grouped together and interior walls are not load bearing, so units can be combined and subdivided freely.
SHELL
Solid 1&2 is made of precast concrete. The structure and façade were designed for longevity and flexibility. Interior walls are not structural and can be easily removed. Utilities and stairs are grouped in two central cores, allowing for maximum adaptability. A floor to ceiling height of 3.4 m (11.2 ft) also facilitates adaptability.
INFILL
Each unit can be used for offices, hotel space, medical or legal practices, social amenities, studios or apartments, and since the interior walls are not structural they too can be removed to facilitate different needs.
FF&E
Each unit is sold empty, allowing the tenant to customize the space exactly to their wishes.
CONTEXT
Solids 1&2 is located on the artificial island IJburg to the east of central Amsterdam. The island was built to provide high-density residential housing.
